Radio planning and performance is a very demanding mission in a carrier network. New operators quickly become under pressure to expand their network coverage to gain as much market share as possible, and at the same time they are under huge pressure regarding their network quality to assure a good perception at startup time in the market.
Even with old and mature operators, with increasing subscribers' base, revising radio system capacities congestions puts them under the same stress of expansion.
The radio part of the UMTS (UTRAN) is a real radical change differentiating GSM from UMTS. The Cells in UTRAN don't have the same fixed coverage and capacity the GSM has; nevertheless it is variable according to the number of subscribers and bandwidth usage. In other words, cell coverage might shrink in high usage time and expand in other times. New concepts like Soft-handover and hard-handover increase the probability of having interoperability problems between 3G Handsets and the operator radio system. Accordingly, this and many other issues increase the need for tools that can measure radio performance while fully supporting the new protocol stacks and call scenarios.
Radio Engineers need handy tools for the new technologies that can spot the radio problems quickly and proactively without going into technical detail of legacy trouble shooting. |
